	A large paved terrace extends along the south and west sides of the house, and is shaded by a metal pergola and ample sun umbrellas. You can enjoy watching the light constantly changing over the Lucca valley, while eight teak or metal sunbeds complete with pool towels make well-secluded sunbathing a delight.


	A pool-side loggia offers shading seating for picnics and barbecues. The solar-heated pool has shallow steps at the house end for children and the infirm. It has an automatic hard cover to retain heat at night, and to guard against accidents. The games room runs beneath the south terrace, and has a full-size table tennis table.

La Fenice is situated between the hamlets of Arsina and San Concordio di Moriano, 5km north of Lucca, in a protected area noted for its beauty.

You can walk up the lane past San Concordio church through the Bosco del Secco to Monte Catino, and you'll find views of the sea, the high peaks (up to 1,947metres or 6,387 ft) around Carrara in one direction and the Appenines in another. Extensive and more testing further walks are laid out around Monte Matanna in the Parco Naturale in the centre of the Apuan Alps, the boundary of which is only 10 km (6¼ miles) from the house as the crow flies. Tennis and golf are available by arrangement nearby.

Traditional Italian seaside facilities are to be found within 45 minutes' drive at the sophisticated Forte di Marmi, at Lido di Camiore, Viareggio and Lerici. South of Pisa, at Migliorino, a nature reserve offers long, wild beaches.

Lucca, for those who don't know it, is a beautiful city dating back to Roman times. It's known for its 16^th century walls which surround the city, and now make a delightful path round which you can walk or cycle, past the city's many churches, medieval towers and the botanical garden --– and stop for refreshment along the way.

In addition, there are numbers of grand villas and gardens to visit nearby, all less than about 15 kilometres (9 miles) away. The Villa Reale at Marlia, the Villa Torrigiani at Segromino near Capannori, the Villa Oliva at San Pancrazio and the Villa Garzoni at Collodi are outstanding.

Other places of interest nearby are the spas at Bagni di Lucca, San Giuliano Terme and Montecatini, and the picturesque towns of the mountainous Garfagnana region, such as Barga and Castelnuovo.

The Puccini Festival is held every summer at Torre del Lago, about 40 minutes away.

Florence, Pisa and Siena can all be reached on day excursions.

Amenities

La Fenice has been designed with the needs of families in mind. Children are welcome, and a cot and high-chair are provided. But the standard of furnishing is high, with polished furniture and antiques, and it will suit guests who are content to look after a family home.
Ample bed linen and towels for use by the pool as well as in the bathroom are provided, and maid service is included in the price.
There are three excellent supermarkets within a short distance, many restaurants and trattorias, and in Lucca delicatessens and stylish shops.
